Improving filter design

Feature Request

Hello, is it possible to make the design of filters, such as those used in checks, for example, simpler?

The nesting of AND/OR conditions makes it difficult to create simple and effective filters.

For example, if I want to filter by a custom field and specify that the item must be both a workstation, a laptop and a Windows server, I have to create three separate filters.

In contrast, in Datto RMM, the same filter requires only two criteria:

    I also see the benefits of this improvement. In my use case, there are often many criteria involved, and even one OR condition needs to end up in the right place. Manual editing is possible, but it would be better if this could be handled automatically.

    Hello there,

    that's a deliberate design decision: we intentionally avoided the classic nested rule builder — it gets confusing fast. For exactly these cases we built OQL instead: enable the Advanced editor switch in the rule section and your example is a single rule:

    customField.location EQUALS "Berlin" AND (DeviceKind IS "WindowsWorkstation" OR DeviceKind IS "WindowsServer")

    Parentheses, nesting and AND/OR cover any combination — so we won't change the builder, but your case already works today in one rule.

      Thank you for your feedback.

      However, and to be transparent, Octoja’s filter system is actually quite complex compared to Datto RMM’s.

      As we have many partners using Datto RMM at the moment, I can assure you that if they see Octoja’s system, there’s a strong chance they’ll be put off. And even more so in the advanced editor view.

      In fact, in Datto RMM, the solution’s key strength lies in how simple it is to create filters and achieve the desired filtering results very easily.

      I think it would be a mistake for Octoja not to review this aspect of the solution. 😉

          Hi @Kevin ENGEL, right now we’re exploring a few different ideas for how to display nested conditions/and filters in octoja. As soon as I have more information to share, I’ll let you know. 🙂
